Learn Korean with us, Lesson 1

9:51 PM

Hello ladies and gentlemen!
This is the first lesson of Learn Korean with us.
What we are going to learn are the basic letters and Korean Word Structure.

Disclaimer: We do not speak the Korean language. We do this to learn it together with you. All the information I get is from my textbooks or from the Internet. There will be a chance of errors. My apologies for that.

Okay let's get started.
The Korean writing system is called Hangul. It is represented by symbols (Jamo), and the jamo are combined into syllables. Either two or three characters are combined to form a single syllable.

Lets look at the letters of the Korean alphabet.

Consonants:
These are pretty easy to learn. Although there are a couple of letters that can confuse you. If you look at the letter ㅂ you can see that it can be used as a P/B. However there is also another letter that can be used as a PP ㅃ. This also goes for the letter ㄱ that means k or g and changes into ㅋ. And also ㅈ meaning J and that changes into ㅊ meaning CH

Vowels:
These are pretty tricky to learn since they all look alike. The best advice I would give is to just learn them diligently.

How to use them?
There are 19 consonants and 21 vowels.
To create a beautiful korean word, you use one of the four ways. It depends on whether the word has a horizontal or a vertical vowel.

Korean is written into “blocks” that make up one syllable. One block always has exactly one syllable. The blocks are always drawn in one of the following ways:

1. Number 2 is always a vowel.
2. Number 1, 3 and sometimes 4
3. Blocks containing a horizontally drawn vowel are always drawn in one of these two ways:

4. Blocks containing a vertically drawn vowel are always drawn in one of these two ways:
